Full Obituary
HARLEN J. BERG, age 84, of Loyal, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the House of the Dove, in Marshfield. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Loyal, with Rev. Daniel Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield. Visitation will be held at the church, on Tuesday, from 10am until time of service.
Harlen James Berg was born on March 26, 1931 in Cameron, WI, to George and Clara (Neuman) Berg. He was raised on the family farm near Dallas, WI, and graduated from Barron High School. After completing high school, Harlen attended several universities, including, UW-River Falls, Oshkosh, Stevens Point and La Crosse, Michigan State, Winona State, Viterbo, and Montana. He earned a degree in education from UW-Eau Claire, where he majored in math, chemistry and physical science; minored in physics, and was computer certified. Harlen was united in marriage to Karlene D. Kleinschmidt on June 24, 1961 at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Riplinger, WI. He taught chemistry and physics for 2 years at UW-Eau Claire and then taught for 33 years for the Loyal School District, retiring in 1992.
He was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer, trustee, usher, sang in the choir, and helped with many projects around the church. Harlen had many interests, but especially enjoyed working on the computer, photography, woodworking, fishing, traveling and reading.
Harlen will be dearly missed by his wife, Karlene, of Loyal; his three sons: James of Marshfield, Robert of Altoona, Daniel (Becky) of Oshkosh; two grandchildren: Lauryn and Jennsen Berg; two sisters: Myrtle Lehman of Osceola, WI, Marcy (Gary) Thalacker of Siren, WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
