Full Obituary

   MARY LOU MATTES, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the age of 92.
   Mary Lou was born on June 9, 1934 , the daughter of Henry O. and Sarah Louisa (Quesnell) Hagenson.  She was raised and educated in the Gilman area, graduating from Gilman High School in 1952.  After completing her education, she moved to Thorp and worked at the Ben Franklin Store. While living in Thorp, she met and later married Clarence Mattes on June 12, 1954.  Mary Lou also worked at the Stanley Corporation before becoming a full-time housewife, mother, and farmwife on the Mattes homestead.  
   After many years farming, the decision was made to sell the farm in April 1994 and move to a smaller place.  Shortly after selling the farm, Clarence passed away October 11, 1998. 
    Mary Lou enjoyed swimming at the local pool, having lunch with friends, going to dances, bus trips, and visits from her family in which she was known for her huge meals (never just 1 meat and many side dishes).  In February 2020, Mary Lou moved into Turner Integrity Care in Thorp where she resided until her death.
   She is survived by her two daughters: Sheree (Dan Erdmann) Mattes of Maple Lake, MN and  Shirlee (Jerry) Hodorowski of Thorp, WI; one granddaughter: Kelly (Tyson) Jaquish of Ridgeland, WI; and three great-grandchildren:  Braden, Adalynn and Dawson Jaquish.  Mary Lou is further survived by two sister-in-laws: Donna Hagenson of Stanley, WI and  Alberta Hagenson of Nevada, MO; and many nieces, nephews. and friends 
   Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, and her five siblings: Arlene Dubiak, Gerald Hagenson, Robert Hagenson, Eugene Hagenson, and Harold Hagenson (in infancy); one sister-in-law: Marion Autio and two brother-in-laws: Joe Dubiak and George Autio.   
   Visitation for Mary Lou will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Thorp Funeral Home, from 10:00am to 11:00am with interment to follow at Sylvan Cemetery, Town of Reseburg, rural Thorp.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mary Lou's family for later donation to the Thorp Food Pantry.
