BERNADETTE M. “BERNIE” SMITH, age 80, of Marshfield, WI, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at The House of the Dove in Marshfield.  Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at St Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood, WI, with Rev.      Bernadette Mary Broehm was born on November 4, 1944 in Appleton, WI to Alfred L. and Mary K. (Charapata) Broehm.  Bernie grew up in Winneconne, WI and worked at her parents’ store while attending high school.  She graduated from Winneconne High School in 1962.  Bernie was united in marriage to Richard Enli on June 23, 1962 at St Mary Catholic Church on Winneconne.  Tragically, he lost his life in an auto accident on December 12, 1964.  She worked at various jobs while attending the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh.  On August 10, 1968 she married Dale Smith in the Newman Center at the University.  The couple and two daughters moved to Greenwood, WI in 1973 for Dale’s work.  Bernie was active in the community as a leader in Girl Scouts and attended nearly all of her daughters’ school activities.  She was an avid fan of Greenwood girls’ volleyball, basketball and softball, and was well known for rooting in the stands.  In 1990, Bernie decided to go back to college at UW-Oshkosh to study to be a special education teacher, graduating in 1993.  In 1997, she started teaching both junior and senior high students for the school district in Loyal, WI.  She retired as a full-time teacher after 20 years of employment.  Bernie was a huge “cheerleader” helping her students succeed in their skills.  She later enjoyed working as a substitute teacher at the Spencer School District.  Besides teaching, she loved garage sales, shopping for bargains, antiques, glassware, collectables, and caring for her dogs.
Survivors include Dale Smith of Marshfield, WI; her two daughters: Nanette (John) Sowieja of Willard and Michele Enli of Englewood, FL; one grandson, Zackarie (Brea) Sowieja of Stevens Point, WI; two great grandchildren: Carter and Emma Sowieja; four sisters: Betty Slick, Barbara Foth, Beverly Wicinsky, and Bonnie (Jon) Jacobsen; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Enli; and her parents; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Special thanks to Compassus Home Care & Hospice Care, and the House of the Dove for their comforting and compassionate support.
