HERBERT P. HERMSEN, age 97, of Thorp, WI, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at New Horizon Community Care in Thorp, WI. A private funeral service will be held at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig's Catholic Church in Thorp for immediate family, with Fr. Baskaran Sandhiyagu officiating. Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery in Little Chute, WI.
Herbert Peter Hermsen was born March 13, 1923, in Racine, WI, the son of Peter and Marie (Coppus) Hermsen. He graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School in Little Chute, WI and as a youth worked in his father’s tire shop. Herb bravely served his country in the US Navy from 1943-1946 as Seaman First Class during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier “U.S.S. Macon Island” in the South Pacific.
On May 28, 1949, Herb was united in marriage to Jean L. Killian at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kaukauna, WI. After their marriage, they moved to Wausau and then later to Thorp. Herb worked for the Thorp Finance Corporation for over 30 years, and then at the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen. After retirement, Herb volunteered for AARP preparing income tax returns for over 15 years.
Herb was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, and the Jacob Coppus Legion Post (named after his uncle) of Little Chute, WI. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed walking, traveling, spending time at the library reading, and following the stock market.
He is survived by his four children: Mark Hermsen of Kingwood, TX, Mary (Rodney) Rathbun of Thorp, Renee (Frank Campillo) Hermsen of Tucson, AZ and Therese (Mitch) Rothman of Roseville, MN; six grandchildren: Claire (Hany) Mahi, Blaise Hermsen, Kevin (Annie) Rogalski, Eric (Tina) Rogalski, Andrea (Reid) Sebion, and Elissa Rothman; six great grandchildren: Tori Rogalski, Annabelle, Jared and Cayden Rogalski, Colette Clark and Charlotte Sebio; three sisters: Catherine Flanagan of Cumming, GA, Elaine Jansen and Betty (Tom) Wydeven both of Little Chute, WI; one brother: Richard (Beverly) Hermsen, of Las Vegas, NV; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister: Jean Miller, and two brothers-in-law: Fran Flanagan and John T. Jansen.
