Fifty-five years ago, I was a college freshman and needed a summer job. Bob and Florence had just purchased the TRG; as I had worked there previously, they hired me again. It was a perfect fit! How I remember those “deadline” Wednesdays! After one particularly stressful week, Florence said, “Cheryl, it’s time for a beer!” We walked next door to the bowling alley on a Wednesday afternoon, and I got paid for having a beer at work.” (It was still legal to drink at age 18 then!) Bob didn’t bat an eye! Bob and Florence made such a good team—they were truly business partners and life partners. Years later, I saw Bob while I was visiting the Highground where he volunteered. Bob was truly interested in others and enjoyed people and loved to tell their stories. It was special to see him that day. He was a proud veteran and a HUGE Twins fan! Thank you for your friendship, Bob. I’m sure there are lots more stories to tell in heaven—and never a deadline!

Fifty-one years ago this month (January 1973) Bob and Florence hired me to be the photographer, reporter, and assistance editor for the TRG. As a recent graduate of UW-L, it was my first job and one that was perfect for me. The experiences I had in my two years with the paper made for the strong foundation I have carried with me through my career. Thank you, Bob, for giving me life lessons when it came to writing, and the importance of being part of the community in which one lives. May you be assigned to the Editor's Desk in heaven! Rest in Peace.
