Janet Marie Rottjer was born on July 8, 1928, in Marshfield, WI, the daughter of Henry and Esther (nee Anderson) Rottjer. She was raised in Loyal, graduating from Loyal High School in 1946. Jan obtained a B.S. degree in Home Economics from Stout Teachers College in 1950. She taught Home Economics at Marion, Medford and Clintonville. Jan was united in marriage to Gene Cook on October 10, 1953, at the Loyal United Methodist Church. She taught high school in Edgerton, until moving to Waukesha in 1960, where she taught at Waukesha County Technical College until her retirement in 1991. She spent her retirement with Gene at Lake Camelot, in the town of Rome. They moved to Marshfield in 2004 to be closer to family.
Jan was very active in several church and social organizations, promoting sewing, crocheting, appliqué, cooking, and quilting. She contributed many volunteer hours to her churches, Faith Lutheran, Woodland Lutheran, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed chair caning, antiques, upholstering and participating with the Romemakers and TOPS groups. She was a passionate quilt maker, working with others and distributing to those in need. Jan enjoyed the YMCA, traveling and spending time at their home on Lake Camelot, entertaining friends and family.
She will be sadly missed by her two children: Joel (Elizabeth) Cook, of Ripon, and Jon Cook (partner Eric Boardsen) of Columbus, OH; two grandchildren: Lauren and Hunter; four brothers-in-law: Roy (Darlene) Cook of Marshfield, Larry (Alice) Cook of Loyal, Lee (Carol) Cook of Lyndon Station, and Dennis (Ruth) Cook of Loyal; many nieces, nephews, cousins in California, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Gene, on September 8, 2007.
Her family truly appreciates the love, care and concern of the doctors, volunteers and staff at the House of Dove and eighth floor cancer care unit at Saint Joseph's Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, Jan requested that family and friends honor her memory through the Gene and Janet Cook Memorial Scholarship. The memorial scholarship will be given to students enrolled in the Business and Home Economics programs through Waukesha County Technical College in Pewaukee, WI where Jan taught classes and Gene was Dean of the School of Business. Contributions may be sent in care of the WCTC Foundation - Gene and Janet Memorial Scholarship, 820 Layton Drive, Ripon, WI 54971.
