Roy Florian Hartl was born in Rudolph, WI to Louis and Bessie (Herman) Hartl on June 30, 1933. He went to Unity School and as a child worked hard on his dad's farm. When not working on the farm he loved boxing, basketball, playing horse shoes and his faithful, old dog "Sport". He met the love of his life, Helen Smazal, at Sherryland Ballroom. He knew that very night she was the one he wanted to marry and one year later they were married on October 5, 1955 in Blenker. Roy & Helen worked on his dad's farm in Unity until moving to Loyal in 1958. Roy worked at Mike's Standard Station, Trail Blazer, and Land O'Lakes until his retirement. He liked all sports and enjoyed throwing horse shoes, shooting pool, baseball, swimming, boxing, bowling, and was a Green Bay Packer and LA Dodger's fan. He always enjoyed a good card game with family and friends and there was usually laughter where dad was. He liked his Chevrolets and enjoyed riding his Yamaha motorcycles. As a young couple Roy and Helen belonged to the Circle 8 Square Dancers. In their later years they packed up their camper and went to many Polka Festivals where he enjoyed listening to Helen play her accordion and they always looked forward to spending their winter months dancing in Arizona. One of Roy's greatest delights were his grandchildren, and he was proud of their athletic talent attending their many volleyball, softball, basketball, football and baseball games.
Roy is lovingly survived by his two daughters and son-in-laws, Shelley & Randy Domine, and Jody & Kerry Smith, both of Loyal; five grandchildren and spouses: Shawna (Domine) & Max Gillette of Mosinee; Breanne (Miller) & Will Sallee of Roseville, MN; Paige (Miller) & Eric Pagenkopf of Loyal; Megan Domine & fiancÚ Tyler Jasurda of Marshfield; and Kaleb Miller of Marshfield. He has three great grandchildren: Ava Holly & Reese Elizabeth Gillette and Wallace Sallee. He is also survived by his sister, Marge (Wayne) Schulz of Spencer, and his brother, Robert (Nancy) Hartl of Marshfield, as well as his brothers-in-law: Vernon Smazal of Auburndale, and Frank (Edie) Smazal of Milladore, and sisters-in-law: Gertie Sazama of Athens; Fran (Albert) Schill of Marshfield; Marie (Hank) Eron of Stevens Point; Volly (Gary) Hendrickson of Spencer; Lila (Daryl) Stewart of Seversville, TN; Laurie (Dick) Raab of Appleton; and Bev Rawlings of Kiel.
He is preceded in death by his dear wife, Helen; grandchildren he so very much loved and missed, Dustin and Holly Domine; his parents, Louis and Bessie Hartl; in-laws, Frank and Mayme Smazal; brothers: Leonard (in infancy), Norbert, Edward, Billy, Louis Jr., and Walter Hartl.
After our mom, Helen, passed away in February, dad shed many tears; he missed her so much and would often say, "The day Helen died, I died." The journey without her was a struggle and he gave it his best, but his heart was with Helen. Dad, we imagine you in perfect peace and hope you are now waltzing across Heaven with mom in your arms!
