Bernice Elizabeth Haas was born on July 30, 1927 to Casper and Lorene (Baures) Haas in Thorp, WI. Bernice was the 7th of eleven children for this big farming family. As a young girl, Bernice went to school at Breezy Hill School in rural Thorp, and later attended Thorp High School through her sophomore year. While working at the Blue Moon Cheese factory of Thorp, WI, she met and fell in love with a young soldier who had recently returned from World War II. Bernice married Harvey Seaman on September 8, 1948 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thorp and raised their family of six children in rural Thorp.
Bernice and Harvey operated a dairy farm and together delivered meals through the Meals on Wheels program for Clark County after their retirement. Bernice used her well-honed cooking skills to feed many travelers and locals at the Thorpedo Restaurant. She was working at this infamous eating establishment the day the doors opened in 1965. Bernice was not one to sit idle. Even when she was sitting enjoying some visiting or TV watching with Harvey, her hands were busy with her needlework or word-search puzzles. Many of Bernice’s friends and family were gifted towels and pillowcases that she spent hours embroidering and have enjoyed during a word-search puzzle with her.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Harvey and children, Carol Boyarski, Donna Kinnett and Keith Seaman, great-grandson Nathan Abramzcak, and 8 brothers and sisters. Left to mourn her passing are sons Bruce (Leslie) Seaman of Muskogee, OK; Glenn (Linnae) Seaman of Amery, WI; and Brad (Darleen) Seaman of Poteau, OK. Twenty-two grandchildren will miss this very special grandma who is remembered for her molasses cookies, beautiful gardens, slush, raspberry jam, blue pickles and a never-ending supply of sweets and treats. The Christmas lunches and Easter celebration with hundreds of eggs hidden over the years; first at the farmhouse in rural Thorp, then at her dream house in town are some of her family’s favorite memories. Bernice’s quiet nature, sweet smile, and soft giggle can be seen living on through her 42 great grandchildren. She is further survived by one son-in-law: Rich Boyarski of Thorp; one daughter-in-law: Sally Seaman of Thorp; 2 brothers: Dave (Pauline) Haas of Thorp, Dennis (Marcia) Haas of Appleton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bernice loved God and found incredible strength in her faith. She fiercely loved her family and they fiercely loved her.
