     ROY A. MALMQUIST, age 85, of New Hope, MN, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Northridge Health & Rehab in New Hope.  Per his request, no services will be held.  Interment of cremains will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd, MN, at a later date.
Roy Alfred Malmquist was born on July 28, 1934 in Walker, MN, to Alfred C. and Lulu E. (Ecklund) Malmquist.  He was raised and received his education in Walker, MN, graduating from Walker High School in 1952.  Roy was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 15, 1953 and served until his honorable discharge on August 16, 1955. He then transferred into the U.S. Army Reserve and worked with the Army Corps of Engineers until his honorable discharge on September 1, 1961. While in the reserves, Roy attended Bemidji State University and earned a teaching certificate in Industrial Arts. Roy was united in marriage on August 22, 1959 to Sandra A. Lawrence at Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing, MN.  Being a school teacher, they moved often, living in Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota and finally settling in Hudson, WI in 1969.  While in Hudson, he worked for 3M in the Twin Cities and then later went to work for American Family Insurance as a subrogation supervisor. After retiring in 2001, they moved to Hammond, WI for a few years and then to Neillsville, WI in 2008.  They resided in Neillsville until moving to a nursing home in Marshfield, WI in 2014. After his wife's passing on December 18, 2016, Roy moved to New Hope, MN in February 2017, where he resided until his death.
     He had many interests, but especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing, boating, canoeing. and was an avid downhill skier, being a member of the Ski Patrol from 1971 to 1984.
     He will be dearly missed by his two children:  Carl (Gwen) Malmquist of New Hope, MN,  Judy (Thomas) Schmidt of Loyal, WI;  three grandchildren:  Jessica (Daniel) Gregory of Little Rock, AR,  Jacob (Sarah) Steinhoff of Marshfield, WI,  Alexandra Malmquist of New Hope, MN; one great-grandson: Bearett Gregory; nieces and nephews.
     Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Sandra; one son: Sander G. Malmquist on March 16, 1964; one sister:  Muriel Brown; and one step-brother: George Hauty.
